To check mic quality beyond just "does it work": open a mic test that includes recording and playback. Record yourself speaking for 10-15 seconds at normal call volume, then play it back and listen for clarity, background noise, static, echo, and distortion. A good mic should produce clear speech without noticeable hiss or room reverb. Check the frequency response by speaking both softly and loudly — the mic should handle both without distorting on loud parts (clipping) or disappearing on quiet parts. If the recording sounds muddy, you may be too far from the mic. If it sounds harsh or distorted, lower the input gain. Compare your USB mic against your laptop's built-in mic to hear the difference. For professional calls, aim for a signal-to-noise ratio where your voice is clearly dominant and room noise is minimal.
