How to Fix Echo on Your Microphone

MicrophoneBy Simone Park2026-03-18

Echo happens when your mic picks up audio from your speakers, creating a feedback loop. The simplest fix is to wear headphones — this physically blocks speaker audio from reaching the mic. If headphones aren't an option, lower your speaker volume significantly, move your mic farther from the speakers, and make sure your meeting app's echo cancellation is enabled. In Zoom, check Settings > Audio > echo cancellation. If multiple people in the same room are on the call, only one device should have audio active. On Windows, disable "Listen to this device" in Sound > Recording > your mic > Properties > Listen tab, as this feature can create a local echo loop. If echo persists, restart the audio service and test with an echo test tool.
