How to Reduce Background Noise on Your Microphone

MicrophoneBy Simone Park2026-03-18

Background noise on calls is picked up because your mic is too sensitive or too far from your mouth. The fastest fix is to use a headset with a boom mic positioned 1-2 inches from your mouth — this dramatically increases voice-to-noise ratio. Lower your mic input gain so it captures less ambient sound. Enable noise suppression in your meeting app: Zoom has it in Settings > Audio > Background noise suppression; Teams enables it automatically; Google Meet has it in Settings > Audio. If you're in a noisy environment, close windows, turn off fans, and move away from appliances. For serious noise reduction, use a cardioid or supercardioid microphone that rejects sound from the sides and rear. Software like Krisp or NVIDIA Broadcast can remove noise in real-time for any app.
