How to Improve Your Webcam Quality for Video Calls

WebcamBy Simone Park2026-03-26

You can dramatically improve webcam quality without buying new hardware. Start with lighting: face a window or use a desk lamp aimed at your face from the front. Good lighting is the single biggest factor in webcam quality. Clean your lens — fingerprints cause soft, hazy images. In your meeting app, enable HD video: Zoom Settings > Video > check HD. Make sure your upload speed is above 3 Mbps so the app doesn't reduce quality to save bandwidth. Sit about 2 feet from the camera with it at eye level. If using a laptop, elevate it on a stack of books. In your webcam software, adjust white balance to match your lighting (auto usually works), increase sharpness slightly, and set the resolution to the maximum your internet can support. For a bigger upgrade, a 1080p external webcam with autofocus will look significantly better than a built-in 720p laptop camera.
