Why Is My Webcam Blurry?

WebcamBy Simone Park2026-03-16

A blurry webcam is usually caused by a dirty lens, low light, low resolution settings, or bandwidth limits during video calls. Start by cleaning the camera lens with a soft microfiber cloth — fingerprints and dust are the most common cause. If the image is still soft, check your lighting: webcams need good front-facing light to produce a sharp image. Avoid backlighting (windows behind you) which makes the camera underexpose your face. Next, check your video resolution settings in Zoom or Teams — some apps default to low resolution to save bandwidth. In Zoom, go to Settings > Video and enable HD. If your internet is slow, video apps will automatically reduce quality, so run a network speed test to check your upload bandwidth. Built-in laptop webcams are typically 720p, which looks softer than a 1080p external webcam.
